The Radar Workshop is a three hours workshop on the theory and use of weather radar data including hands-on section where participants download and display data.

This workshop is a 2 hours content, 1 hour guided hands-on instruction, 1 hour optional practice. Workshop will employ NOAA’s Weather and Climate Toolkit installed on lab computers, but can be easily installed on personal computers.

Topics Includes:

• Brief history of weather radars
• How radars work
• Estimation of precipitation rate from radar & multi-sensor observations
• Detection of precipitation type from polarimetric radarmeasurements
• Limitations in precipitation estimation due to beam geometry,bright bands & topography
• Doppler & estimation of wind velocity, shear & wind profiles
• Severe Storm detection: mesocyclones, tornadoes, downbursts,straight line winds, hail
• Where to access radar data and derived products
• Intro to working with radar data & making imagery
