Education and Outreach

At CUNY CREST Institute, we believe that weather station data can be a powerful tool for increasing awareness and understanding of weather and climate in urban areas, particularly New York City. Our education and outreach program aims to engage K-12 students, educators, and the general public in learning about the importance of weather and climate data for decision-making, emergency preparedness, and community resilience.

Through our program, we provide professional development opportunities for educators, create and distribute educational materials, establish partnerships with local community organizations, collaborate with emergency management agencies, use weather station data to create social vulnerability maps, and promote citizen science. We strive to establish a sustainable funding model for the weather station network and associated education and outreach program, to ensure that our efforts can have a lasting impact. Specific objectives of this network:

  • Engage K-12 students and educators in hands-on, inquiry-based learning activities using weather station data and products.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for educators to learn how to incorporate weather station data and products into their curriculum.
  • Create and distribute educational materials, such as lesson plans and fact sheets, that explain the importance of weather and climate data for urban areas and how it can be used for decision-making.
  • Establish partnerships with local community organizations, such as libraries and community centers, to provide access to weather station data and products and to host educational events.
  • Collaborate with local emergency management agencies to demonstrate the role of weather station data in emergency preparedness and response.
  • Use weather station data to create social vulnerability maps that highlight the impacts of weather and climate on different communities within urban areas.
  • Promote citizen science by engaging the general public in collecting and reporting weather data from the weather station network.
  • Establish a sustainable funding model for the weather station network and associated education and outreach program.
