Research Interests:
Dr Papa's research interests include Earth's observation (ocean and land surfaces), satellite remote sensing techniques devoted to water surfaces and hydrology studies, such as wetlands, floods, rivers and lakes.

His early work during his Ph.D. at the French Space Agency wwas focused on the new potential for radar altimeter satellites (Topex-Poseidon, Envisat, etc.) to study continental surfaces, inland water and sea ice.

His current work at the Paris Observatory and at NASA GISS and Columbia Unversity under the direction of William Rossow is focused on the use of multi-satellite dataset (active and passive microwave) for water surfaces (wetlands, floods, etc.) detection and for global and local hydrology studies.

Dr Papa is the P.I. for hydrology in the Indian Sub-Continent project of the Centre de Cooperation Franco-Indien pour l'Environnement et le Climat (CEFIRE). He is a member of science teams involved in projects studying the Aral Sea Basin in Central Asia, where he participated several times in field-trip expeditions. He is also involved in projects over South American regions (Amazon River, Lake Titicaca). He was part of the team experts for the validation of the radar altimeter RA2 onboard the European Space Agency's satellite Envisat.
